About This Page

Triphenyl phosphate (TPHP) is an organophosphate flame retardant widely used in a variety of industries, with concern growing about potential health risks associated with exposure via inhalation or ingestion. The Division of Translational Toxicology at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences evaluated the subchronic toxicity and developmental neurotoxicity of TPHP following exposure via dosed feed in male and female Sprague Dawley (Hsd:Sprague Dawley® SD®) rats. Exposure began in utero and continued through lactation and weaning, followed by exposure for a minimum of 3 months.

This page provides documentation of how the study was conducted as well as the study results in the form of summary data and individual animal data. A peer-reviewed journal publication on this in vivo, repeat-dose biological potency study of TPHP is in preparation, with anticipated publication in fall 2026. Updates to this page are possible and will be identified with a date and description of changes. Data on this page should not be construed to represent any agency determination or policy.
